Union Orthotics & Prosthetics Co. Celebrates Amputee Drummer Samuel Gabud During Limb Loss Awareness Month

For Limb Loss Awareness Month, Union Orthotics & Prosthetics Co. highlights one of our many patient success stories, Sam Gabud.

In April 2010, National Limb Loss Awareness Month was launched to promote a better understanding and awareness of Limb Loss and Limb Loss Difference. In the US, 2.1 million people are living with limb loss and 185,000 people have an amputation each year. By 2050, the number of amputees is expected to double. Limb loss is something that does not discriminate and affects people of all different backgrounds.

At Union O & P, our goal is to help our patients be able to continue with their daily activities utilizing their custom-fabricated prostheses. We strive to empower individuals to take back control of their life after having a life-changing experience. Union O & P is excited to share this patient story that exemplifies resilience and determination.

Our patient, Sam Gabud, has been with our company for almost two years, since his left below-knee amputation. Sam has loved working with the Union O & P team because “they have worked intensively with [him] to make sure his [prosthesis] fit was great and everything was fine”. He works with Jacob Dennison, LO, LP, our central regional manager, and the rest of our exceptional team at our Harmar location.

Despite Sam’s amputation, he has a bright outlook on life. Although it wasn’t easy, Sam has regained his mobility with the help of physical therapy and his prosthesis. His advice is to others living with limb loss, “Don’t look back. You can start living from the time that happens... if you work hard and even when you feel like giving up… just stay with it… It can be very rewarding in the end when you regain your mobility and your life does not have to end, so don’t give up and work hard”. Sam’s limb loss doesn’t stop him from doing any of the things he loves.

When you talk to him, you can tell he lights up when he talks about his hobbies. He loves to ride and photograph old antique steam trains. He is a stellar musician and he plays the drums and percussion semi-professionally. All of the hard work and drive is for his family, consisting of his 9-year-old daughter, and mom whom he takes care of. He loves the outdoors and experiencing everyday life with his daughter. Sam is an inspiration to us all and proves that through hard work and a positive attitude, you can accomplish anything you set your mind to.
