Hot summer weather can create some unique challenges for people who wear a prosthesis. Here are some important tips to help you stay comfortable and keep your prosthetic leg in good condition.
Keep Your Skin Dry
One of the biggest challenges during hot weather is sweating. Excess moisture can lead to skin irritation, discomfort, and problems with prosthetic fit.
☀️ Remove your prosthesis periodically throughout the day if you’re sweating heavily.
☀️ Dry off your residual limb and liner before putting everything back on.
☀️ Check your skin regularly for irritation, redness, or other concerns.
If excessive sweating continues to be a problem, talk with your prosthetist. They may be able to recommend solutions to help manage moisture and improve comfort.
Is Your Prosthesis Adventure Ready? Ask Your Prosthetist!
Sand, water, debris and saltwater can all affect your prosthetic components, especially if your device contains electronic parts.
🏖️ Check with your prosthetist before taking your prosthesis into the water or onto the beach.
🏖️ Ask whether your prosthetic components are water-resistant or require special protection.
🏖️ Consider using a protective cover such as a DryPro® sleeve, which helps keep water and sand away from your prosthesis.
Consider a Dedicated Beach or Water Leg
If you have a backup prosthesis, your prosthetist may be able to modify it for use at the beach, pool, or other summer activities. A dedicated recreational prosthesis can help protect your everyday device while allowing you to enjoy the water with confidence.
Cleaning Up After Exposure
Prosthesis
If your device is exposed to:
🌊 Pool water, salt water or lake water / 🏖️ Sand, mud, dirt and debris 🏔️
Be sure to rinse it thoroughly afterward with fresh water. Proper cleaning helps prevent corrosion, wear, and other issues, keeping your prosthesis functioning properly throughout the summer.
Sockets
- Remove the prosthesis and any liner.
- Wipe the inside of the socket with a soft cloth dampened with mild soap and warm water, or prosthetist-recommended cleaning solution.
- Rinse with a clean damp cloth to remove soap residue.
- Dry thoroughly with a clean towel and allow it to air dry before wearing it again.
Liner Care
Turn the liner inside out so the gel side faces outward. Wash with lukewarm water and a mild, non-irritating body soap using a soft cloth or sponge. Avoid scrubbing, rinse thoroughly, and dry with a lint-free cloth. Do not use antibacterial, perfumed, or harsh soaps.
