In recognition of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Awareness Month, Union Orthotics & Prosthetics Co. is proud to join the MS community by going orange and helping raise awareness for those affected by MS. Throughout March, we are highlighting a wide range of trusted national and local Pittsburgh MS resources—including educational tools, support organizations, and online communities that empower individuals living with MS.
WHAT IS MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS?
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic disease that affects the central nervous system. It occurs when the immune system attacks the protective covering of nerve fibers (myelin), disrupting communication between the brain and the rest of the body.
Common symptoms may include:
- Numbness or tingling
- Muscle weakness
- Difficulties with walking or coordination
- Vision changes
- Fatigue and mobility challenges
As part of our commitment to supporting mobility and independence, we’re also sharing information about our orthotic devices and bracing solutions that can help manage MS-related mobility challenges. These include external orthoses designed to assist with symptoms such as:
- Foot Drop
- Weakness or instability in the lower limbs
- Fatigue-related gait issues
- Balance difficulties
