Union Orthotics & Prosthetics Co. has over 50 clinicians in our 19 locations throughout Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania. Each clinician has a passion for their craft and different specializations that empower them to provide the best care for our patients.

Periodically, we like to highlight one of our orthotics and prosthetics clinicians to show our appreciation for their expertise in our field. This allows our patients and staff to get to know these individuals and celebrate what makes them great employees and exceptional professionals. This month, Union O&P is excited to highlight Prosthetic Clinician, Bobby Dobson IV, CPO.

Q & A with Bobby

How long have you been with the company?
Going on 17 years this June.

Where did you study?
University of Pittsburgh.

How did you get into the field?
My father got me working with him part-time in the summer of 2006. When I graduated from high school in 2008, I began working full-time as a prosthetic technician.

What is your clinical specialization?
Prosthetics, a majority lower extremities and a handful of upper extremities.

What made you decide to specialize in prosthetics?
My family history. My father is a prosthetist, and my grandfather was a prosthetist.

What do you like most about working in O&P?
The advancements in technology. I enjoy scanning a person's extremity using a tablet and modifying the scan on the computer. I like experimenting with different items available for patients to see what works best.

What is your greatest achievement/what are you most proud of in your professional career?
Graduating with a master's degree and becoming a certified orthotist/prosthetist.

What is your biggest joy in working with patients?
Watching someone walking for the 1st time and the family members' reactions to them standing and walking again.

What do you do outside of work?
I am a parent of 6-year-old twins. I coach their deck hockey team. We enjoy taking summer vacations to Kalahari Water Park in Ohio.

What is a fun fact about yourself?
I raise chickens.

What is your favorite food?
Homemade pizza.

Check out this video of Bobby and his father, Bob, trying out a Direct Socket on Union O&P patient Rosemary. The Direct Socket by Ossur allows for the socket to be directly laminated on the patient for an intimate fit, trimmed and finished, and have the patient walking on the assembled prosthesis all in one day!
